Deer Hunting Season

Deer Hunting Season

What do we do when it's deer hunting season?

When hunting local, we wake up real early, usually around 3 am. We do the milking. We feed the calves, pigs, horses, and dogs. We move the portable fence, so the cows and heifers have fresh pasture for the day and try to be in the woods before dawn.

Although it can be challenging to find the time to hunt, it is very relaxing to sit out in God’s creation and watch nature.

On November 25th, my 10-year old son, Marlin, accompanied me for his first ever deer hunt. My wife, Sadie, and our daughters did the milking, so we could have some Father-Son time which is really special.

It turned out to be a gorgeous day.

We saw quite a few deer and were able to harvest a mature doe. Our family likes venison (deer meat) with bologna and dried venison probably being our favorite. So, now we have venison in the freezer along with our 100% grass fed beef, pastured pork, chicken, and turkey which keeps things interesting.

We can't sell you any of our venison, unfortunately. Boo-hoo!! However, we do have some wonderful new products.

So long for now.

Wishing God’s blessing to you and your family.

Simply Beautiful at the Garden

I spent this morning leisurely walking the property and basking in the beauty of where we live and where our livestock graze and grow your grass fed food. Not everyone gets an opportunity to experience this majestic land first hand, so I’m bringing you with me in photos. Scroll slowly through these pictures, take a deep breathe, smell and listen to each one, and really drink from Nature’s full cup of glory.

Spring is Here!

As the weather sways back and forth from Spring back to Winter and back to Spring again, we are beginning to feel life preparing to POP!! Daffodils Bloom. Tree buds express. Grass is beginning to grow. Baby animals are being born. On the farm, it’s time to wrap up all final winter fence and water system repair projects, test out the equipment and get ready for the next 6 months of rotational grazing and hay making.

The Sun Will Rise Again

I was having a difficult time getting excited about Spring. Even with the pure white Dogwoods, the Eastern Redbuds bursting along the highway, the Daffodils and Forsythia blossoming and bedazzling, the baaa-ing new baby lambs, and the pasture so ready to burst with new life, I still was feeling dull and depressed. Here at Burke’s Garden, we buried several of our good friends and members of our farm family.
